Nam O Fish Sauce Village is a traditional handicraft and fishing village in northwest Da Nang, located in a picturesque spot at the foot of the Hai Van Pass . Here, the Cu Đê River meets Da Nang Bay, and nearby are the sea, mountains, and traditional settlements.

Nam Ô is primarily known for its production of nước mắm —traditional Vietnamese fish sauce. For locals, it's not just a popular product, but a part of the cultural history and way of life of the coastal community.

The history of Nam Ô spans over 700 years . For generations, the village's life was closely linked to the sea and fishing. The abundance of fish caught naturally led to the development of methods for preserving them, one of which was the production of fermented fish sauce.

Traditional Nam Ô fish sauce is made primarily from black anchovies and salt . After the ingredients are mixed, the fish undergoes a lengthy natural fermentation process. In modern traditional farms, the product can be aged for approximately 12–18 months , resulting in a rich sauce with a characteristic dark reddish-amber hue, a distinct aroma, and a naturally rich flavor.

Particular attention is paid not only to the fish but also to the salt. Salt varieties from several regions of Central Vietnam are used for production, and the process itself involves aging the raw materials and subsequent fermentation in traditional vessels.

Today, Nam Ô remains a vibrant craft village , not a museum converted solely into a tourist attraction. Cooperatives and small family-run businesses operate here. According to the Da Nang tourism portal, the village boasts dozens of members of the craft community, and its annual production reaches significant volumes.

The product received its special status in 2024 , when Nam Ô fish sauce became the first Da Nang product to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate. This underscores the product's connection to a specific territory and the tradition of its production.

In 2019, the craft of Nam Ô fish sauce production was inscribed on Vietnam's National Intangible Cultural Heritage List . Therefore, a visit to the village is interesting not only from a culinary perspective but also an opportunity to learn about one of the traditional crafts of Central Vietnam.

Beyond fish sauce production, Nam Ô is also a fascinating historical and cultural destination. The village boasts ancient Cham wells , religious and memorial sites associated with local legends, and other traces of the settlement's centuries-old history.

For tourists, the ideal visit format is a stroll through the village, meeting local producers, observing the traditional process, and purchasing original fish sauce directly from the producers. The tourism portal recommends respecting the work areas and not interfering with the production process.

Nam Ô is particularly well-suited to other attractions in northwest Da Nang. After visiting the village, you can head to Nam O Reef and then continue along Hai Van Pass.
