❗️Fines for driving without a license (updated information for 2026):
Since January 1, 2025, Decree 168/2024 has been in effect in Vietnam , increasing fines by 5-30 times compared to previous standards. Since March 1, 2026, Decree 336 has been in effect, setting a new maximum fine: 75 million dong (~$3,000) for individuals and 150 million dong for organizations.
The era of "fixing a problem for 200" is officially over. Cameras are everywhere, and fines arrive by mail.
For motorcyclists
Rights and categories – important for expats
Without a license in Vietnam you can only drive:
moped up to 50 cc (from 16 years old)
electric bike up to 4 kW (from 16 years old)
An International Driving Permit is recognized, but the category must match.
For motorists
Point system - from 2025
Serious violations result in points being deducted from a driver's license. A zero-point score results in license revocation and a mandatory retest.
What to do if stopped by the police
Stop, don't argue
Documents: passport, driver's license, bike registration, insurance
The fine is paid officially - a receipt is required
If you're stopped with a camera, a letter will be sent to the bike rental company's address.
