Большая статьяHistory of Phu Quoc Island: The Most Important Thing People inhabited the island approximately 2,500 years ago: pottery and stone tools found here date back to the Óc Eo culture of the Funan kingdom (1st–6th centuries). The island later came under the control of the Khmers, who called it Koh Tral—it is mentioned in Cambodian documents from 1615. Around 1680, the Khmer king permitted the merchant Mac Kueu to explore the coastline along with Phu Quoc, and in 1708, Mac Kueu came under the control of the Vietnamese Nguyen lords.
From 1782 to 1786, the future Emperor Gia Long, Nguyễn Ánh, hid on Phu Quoc from the Tay Son army along with the French missionary Pigneau de Behaine. From here, he later began his journey to unify the country; a temple and legends about those years remain on the island.

In 1986, Vietnam launched the Doi Moi reforms—a market economy and openness to the world. Crafts revived on Phu Quoc, including fish sauce, pepper, and pearls. The first tourists arrived in the 1990s, and in 2004, the government decided to develop the island as a resort, and in 2012, a new international airport opened.

Здесь Нгуен Ань прятался от тэйшонов. Мыс назван в честь солдата, который спас его от погони: став императором, Зя Лонг вернулся, устроил поминальную церемонию и дал мысу имя Онг Дой. Рядом — храм в честь Зя Лонга; камень у моря, похожий на трон, по легенде — место, где он думал о будущем страны.

A second 3,500-meter-long runway and new terminals are being built for the APEC 2027 summit: capacity will increase to 18 million passengers per year.
A 6,500-seat convention center and a 4,000-seat theater are being built on the reclaimed land of Bai Dat Do. Completion is scheduled for March 30, 2027, when APEC Leaders' Week 2027 will be held there.
The temple dedicated to the patron saint of sailors and fishermen was rebuilt in 1937 on the site of an older shrine. The lighthouse on the cliff has been signaling ships since the 1930s.

In September 1868, here at Cape Ganh Dau, the French captured Nguyen Trung Chic, a resistance hero who had recaptured the Rach Gia fortress from them that same year. He was executed on October 27, 1868. A temple was built on the site of his capture in 1993.

Which beach on Phu Quoc Island is the most beautiful and why is there so much confusion about beaches?
It's like asking which child is your favorite! Each beach has its own character. Bai Sao is an Instagram star with its white sand and turquoise water, perfect for photos. Long Beach is the longest in Vietnam (20 km!), boasting the best sunsets and all the necessary infrastructure. Bai Kem is for romantics, quiet and secluded, with palm trees stretching right down to the water. Ong Lang is for those who want to feel like Robinson Crusoe, an almost wild beach with crystal-clear water. And Vung Bau is family-friendly, safe, and has shallow water for children.
What's there to do in Phu Quoc besides the beach? Is it boring for active tourists?
Phu Quoc offers so many activities that a week wouldn't be enough! The cable car to Hon Thom Island —8 km above the sea, one of the longest in the world—the views are breathtaking! Snorkeling tours around the islands —the coral reefs here are some of the best in Asia. The national park covers 70% of the island—hiking, visiting Suoi Chan waterfalls, and wildlife watching. How safe is Phu Quoc? Are there any special features for tourists?
Phu Quoc is one of the safest resorts in Asia! The crime rate is extremely low, and the locals are very friendly to tourists. However, there are some caveats: sea currents on some beaches can be strong, especially during the low season—swim only in designated areas. Motorbikes are the main form of transportation, so be careful on the roads. Mosquitoes are active at sunrise and sunset, especially near waterfalls and in the jungle—repellent is essential. The sun is very strong—SPF 50+ sunscreen and a hat will protect you from sunburn. Standard tourist precautions: don't show off expensive items, haggle at markets, and check bills at restaurants. Overall, it's a paradise for families with children—clean beaches, high-quality food, and excellent healthcare.
